What Happens at a meeting

16 Oct 2026 · @MWBN

Most networking events leave you with a pocket full of business cards and nobody to follow up with. You make polite conversation, swap details, and go back to running everything on your own. If you've been in business a while, you've probably sat through enough of those to know they rarely change anything.

We built MWBN meetings the other way round. Every meeting follows the same purposeful structure, month after month, and each part is there for a reason. Here's what a morning with us actually looks like, and why we run it this way.

Arrive, breathe, connect

The doors open from 9:45am and we start promptly at 10:00am. That first quarter of an hour is deliberately unstructured. It's time to catch up with the women you saw last month, continue conversations from the previous month, and settle in with a cuppa of course before the meeting begins.

Starting on time matters to us too. Our members are busy women, and respecting their mornings is part of respecting them.

A short welcome and updates

We open with any network announcements, upcoming opportunities and member news. This keeps everyone in the loop without eating into the time that matters most.

The one-minute round

Every member gets one minute. In that minute she shares what's happened in her business since the last meeting and makes one clear ask of the group.

This isn't an elevator pitch, and the ask is the important part. "I'm looking for new clients" is very hard for a room to help with. "I'd love an introduction to the practice manager at a GP surgery in south Manchester" is something a room full of women can actually act on. The more specific the ask, the more likely someone in the room says "I know her, leave it with me."

Learning to communicate what we do and ask clearly for what we need is a valuable business skill in itself. And often, someone in the room may have exactly the connection we're looking for.

Give and receive, in threes

Next we split into groups of three. Each woman shares where she needs support, and commits to helping the other two before we meet again.

Three is a deliberate number. It's small enough that nobody can hide and nobody gets talked over, and it means every person both gives and receives. Nobody leaves having only taken, and nobody leaves having only given. Everyone walks out with a couple of practical actions, which is a very different feeling from walking out with a handful of business cards.

Member spotlight

Each month, one member has 10 to 15 minutes to show us her business properly. She can share what she does, who she works with, her journey, her expertise and the types of clients or opportunities she's looking for. The room then has an opportunity to ask questions.

It's hard to refer someone you only know from a name badge. After a spotlight, you understand her business well enough to spot the right client for her in your own conversations, and that's where the strongest referrals come from.

Accountability

This is the part that quietly changes things. We revisit the commitments made at the previous meeting, ask how they went, and celebrate the progress.

When you run your own business, or carry a lot of responsibility in someone else's, there's often nobody who asks "did you do the thing you said you'd do?" Your clients don't ask. Your family is proud of you but doesn't always know the details. A room that remembers what you said last month, and genuinely wants to hear how it went, is a quiet but powerful thing. It's often the difference between a good intention and a finished task.

Positive contributions

This isn't another chance to promote your business. Instead, we recognise the members who have strengthened the network since we last met: the referrals passed on, the introductions made, the guests brought along, the support given behind the scenes and of course the business generated. Those actions count towards our Give and Receive rewards programme on our very own MWBN app, because generosity is something we want to notice out loud.

The educational spot

One member leads a short teaching session from her area of expertise. The rule is simple: teach, don't sell. It might be something that helps the business, or something that helps the woman running it. Either way, everyone takes away something practical, and the member teaching gets to deliver her expertise in the most credible way there is.

A Spiritual Boost

We finish off with a short, faith-centred reminder to reconnect us with our values and intentions. This is an important part of what makes MWBN unique and our members love it! We are committed to creating a space where we can grow not only in business, but also in faith, keeping our spiritual growth at the heart of our entrepreneurial or professional journey.

Closing, then open networking until 12:30

We finish the formal meeting at 12:00 but certainly nobody rushes off. Open networking runs until 12:30pm, and it's where 1:1s get booked, collaborations start, and the conversations carry on. Honestly, they rarely end on time.

Come and see it for yourself

None of these parts is complicated on its own. What makes the difference is doing them together, every month, with the same women, so trust builds and follow-through becomes normal. That's what most of us were missing: not more contacts, but a room that knows our business, holds us to our word and celebrates the wins nobody else sees.

If that sounds like the room you've been looking for, come to our next Manchester meeting on Friday 13 November as our guest. We start at 10:00am (arrive from 9:45am) and finish with networking until 12:30pm.
